DEFENDANT SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR DEADLY SHOOTING

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Edson Giron Figueroa was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 2021 shooting death of a 25-year-old.

District Attorney Katz said: “This is a case of yet another young person’s life cut short by gun violence. We will continue to fight against illegal guns with everything we have, on the streets and in the courts.”

Giron Figueroa, 21, of 108th Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, pleaded guilty last month to manslaughter in the first degree before Justice Kenneth C. Holder, who imposed a sentence of 20 years in prison to be followed by five years post-release supervision.

According to the charges, on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at approximately 2:40 a.m., the defendant walked to a commercial building on 150th Street near 105th Avenue in Jamaica looking to rob someone. Giron Figueroa approached the victim, Albert Serrato, from behind, pointed a gun and demanded money. When Serrato turned around, the defendant fired several times and ran away. The defendant later asked a friend to dispose of the gun.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Zawistowski, of the District Attorney’s Homicide Bureau, prosecuted the case, with the assistance of Assistant District Attorneys Bryan Kotowski and Emily Collins, under the supervision of Assistant District Attorneys Peter McCormack III and John Kosinski, Senior Deputy Bureau Chiefs, and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Shawn Clark.
